My New Favorite Magazine - Self Service

Self Service is a Paris based fashion and culture magazine that is the best thing to happen to magazine's in a very long time...

As you can see, it's a hard back magazine (only one of it's many novel features). In addition to having an actual "spine", Self Service is a bi-annual platform for experimenting with photography, styling, writing, graphics, typography and layout in order to present an adventurous and unusual publication.

Normally I wouldn't think to use the word "sexy" to describe a magazine but then again there's nothing normal about a publication from the city of love named self service (I'll let you take that where ever you wanna take it..)

Issue 32 (Spring/Summer 2010) is on shelf now and you can check out the blog for daily posts.

Where the hell you been?!?

Okay, so I took a bit of a break from blogging.

It's been a month and a half (which in blogging terms is the equivalent of about a year).

That said, most of my fans have stayed with me.

Yes, I've gotten a few hate messages but hey...I guess I deserved that.

So, in short order, here is what I've been up to during the last 6 weeks

1. I got a new job (that is an understatement...I'm actually moving out of the country)

2. I've been to Geneva Switzerland, Rome and Milan Italy (photo's of the fashion are coming...don't worry)

3. I've put my house on the market (...bittersweet)

4. I've ended a relationship (...just bitter)

5. I met Matthew Mcconaughey and confirmed that he is as "smart" as I thought he was

All in all. It was a busy couple of weeks.

I'm back Bitches!!!!

Is aluminium luggage practical?...NO

Gucci for Sport

This spring marked the launch of Gucci's newest fragrance for men. Gucci by Gucci Sport pour Homme comes on the heels of the successful launch of the Gucci by Gucci pour Homme fragrance, launch last year.

Gucci creative director Frida Giannini describes the fragrance, fronted by actor James Franco, as "a light body with a lot of citrus notes -- capturing the healthy, active aspects of the Gucci man's lifestyle."

The scent includes notes of grapefruit, madarin, cypress, aromatic cardamom, the fruity nectar of Corsican figs, juniper berries, vetiver, patchouli and ambrette seed. The result is a lighter, more casual scent vs. the original Gucci by Gucci.

In most cases, the sequel is never as good as the original...THIS is not one of those cases.

A Movie, A Game & A Girl

The Disney film "Prince of Persia" will be released Friday May 28th and I fully expect this Jerry Bruckheimer film to be another summer blockbuster.

Fans of this franchise will know it best from the Ubi Soft video game trilogy Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The video game developers have used the release of the film as an opportunity to rehash the video game and the clip below is proof positive that those guys have been hard at work.

Both the film and the game play are visually stunning but both pale in comparison to the Details magazine photo shoot for the actress that plays Princess Tamina - Gemma Arterton

The Kent (Southeast England) born actress is fresh from her turn as the Greek demigoddess Io in the film Clash of the Titans and is quickly cementing herself as the new queen of the action epic adventure.

Although fans of Gemma might appreciate that her next film, The Disappearance of Alice Creed, will require a bit of nudity, they will likely appreciate her approach to those scenes even more..."On camera, I really don't give a shit...."

Shoe of the Month

The Italian shoe maker Lodger has just started a program called 'Shoe of the Month' and the shoe for May is this amazing suede loafer.

Yeah...I've been on a bit of a shoe kick lately but this Arpley Weekend Slip on is a smart and elegant shoe that will bring a pop of color to any man's footwear collection.

The Arpley is priced at £325 and available at the Lodger online store. Available in the understated French Navy or the less reserved fiery Paprika, the Aprley has a thin leather sole, studded with rubber buttons to give better grip and extend the life of the leather.

A contrasting chocolate grain leather on the collar and counter patch adds a little definition, highlighting the elegant low cut on the ankle.

The clean and simple design on the upper shows off the fine nap of the suede, as well as highlights the hand stitching on the edge of the apron.

With an air of elegance, the Lodger Weekend slip-on is the ideal foundation for smart chinos as well as your favorite denim pant. This Italian made slip-on is beautifully made and will last a lifetime. My advice..."get your Cinderella on" and slip your feet into a pair of these.

Timberland Does it Again

It's been a little while since I blogged about the Timberland Boot Company but if you caught that particular entry or have been following the brand over the last year or so, my guess is that you've been as pleasantly surprised as I have.

Frankly, it's been quite the turn-a-bout for that brand. Timberland has quite literally "changed face". From the footwear of the urban soldier to a sophisticated collection of walking shoes, boots and oxfords that would turn any hip hoping back packer into a pavement pounding hipster.

The latest in the collection Colrain Reissue Series. The most striking of the bunch, in my humble opinion, are the 6 and 8 inch boots in leather or combination leather and canvas.

Hand finished and burnished leather, padded collars and leather soles are just a few of the features of that make these boots so outstanding.

The spring collection from the Timberland Boot company reflects a pragmatism guided by the conditions, technology and assets that surrounded men of a simpler time. The result, surprising, is not reflective but rather progressive.

Happy "5th of May"

Unless you're Rip Van Winkle and just waking up from several decades of sleep you are very well aware that today, the 5th day of May, is celebrated throughout the US as "Cinco de Mayo".

Not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, which occurs on September 16, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Not widely acknowledged across all of Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States (mostly because of our loose immigration laws ----- I'm KIDDING!!!).

This day has special significance for two reasons:

First, During the Battle of Puebla 4,000 Mexican soldiers defeated a well-equipped French army of 8,000 that had not been defeated for almost 50 years.
Second, it is significant because since the Battle of Puebla no country in the Americas has been invaded by an army from another continent.

So if your boss gives you crap tomorrow, for coming into work late and smelling of fine Tequila, you can tell him -- "Damn right I'm drunk! I spent last night celebrating the impenetrable fortress we like to call....AMERICA - you communist coward!!!"

Tequila is a powerful drug...

How to Shine Shoes

Sorry...I spoke too soon.

THIS...is the best 3 minutes you will ever spend on a blog about men's fashion.

This guy is just plain memorizing! If you freeze the video at 3:09 you can literally see the mirror shine that this young man creates.

What I find even more interesting is on the surface this is a good instructional video but if you watch again you'll see that it is also a relaxation tool...the warm colors, tones and textures blending together...the richness of the sounds....an orchestra of subtle sounds as rich and warm as any peaceful garden.....there is a peace within this video that soothes and relaxes the viewer if they are receptive to its....watch it again, relax this time, enjoy.

Make it Rain

They say April showers bring May flowers. Well, if you live anywhere on the east coast then you’d be happy to see a freakin’ flower right now. Some parts of the country (like the one I live in) have seen as much as 8 inches of rain in the past 2 days alone.

This horrid weather, coupled with the fact that a stylish piece of rain resistant clothing is getting harder and harder to come by, has me looking for a new rain jacket.

While surfing the “world wide web” I ran across an Italian brand named allegri. Established in the 1960’s, this historical Italian outerwear brand specializes in waterproof fabrics used for raincoats, trench coats, caban jackets and short jackets.

Headquartered in Florence, allegri is still mostly family owned (60%) and produced in a factory that employs just 130 people.

What I really appreciate about the brand, and it's design aesthetic, is the fact that they have made a choice to focus on innovative fabrics to create a very clear point of view. The brands tagline "The architects of fabric" is very fitting.

They seem to have taken a similar approach to storied Italian fabric manufacturer Zegna. allegri, who for a time created water resistant fabrics for other brands, is now enjoying success as a innovative design house with it's on name to promote.

If left up to allegri (figuratively and fiscally) they will be looking to "make it rain" as much as possible. Based on what I've seen...the sky looks pretty cloudy.

Aloe Blacc & Stones Throw Records

I don't have the "Tweed Tunes" feature anymore but I'm still, and always will be a lover of great music - no matter the genre.

That's why I was so excited when I saw the video below...

Although the first season of the hit HBO show, "How to Make it in America", is over the video for the incredible opening credits song has finally streamed it's way onto the net....

The record company (Stones Throw) is fast becoming the clearing house for a new brand of soul music. Artists like Aloe Blacc and Mayer Hawthorne (a white kid from Ann Arbor, MI who sings soul music like he was born to do it) have been bubbling up for the last year or so. Check out the video for Hawthorne's hit single "Maybe So, Maybe No"...

The Best Condom Ads...Ever

This collection of Durex ads are some of the best I've ever seen.

Check out these (called "Typo Sex") and the way the ad agency used the words that describe the situation to make the human forms

The three below come from a series of ads called "Love is Blind". If you tilt you computer screen the right way you can see that some of the word is missing (i.e. I Love Nancy is actually "I Love PregNancy")....Brilliant!

And finally, the best of the bunch are three print ads for the Durex "Performa" line of condoms - Designed to make you last longer. When they were introduced, each pack of condoms came with a pillow cover that had an "ugly" image that guys could focus on, to help him last longer while he was busy pleasing his mate (or, in the case of the first ad, being pleased)

I always thought the "Trojan" man was kind of corny....now I'm sure of it.

Brother Sharp

Usually, when we talk about fashion in the far East we talk about Japan. From Nigo (Bape) to Harajuku Station to Takashi Murakami, this little island off the coast of Russia and Korea has long been known as the fashion capital of the far East.

China, on the other hand, is rarely on the short list of countries that are viewed as fashion hubs for the world.

That's what makes this story so interesting...

The photograph above is of a strikingly good looking Chinese man who looks like he could be walking the catwalks in Milan, Paris or New York. His layering is perfectly bohemian (parka, on top of hooded zip up, on top of thin nylon jacket, on top of ribbed sweater) and his lips grip the cigarette as precariously as he seems to be holding the bag - probably from the high end shop he left before he lit up and began his stroll.

In fact, this guy is walking the street looking just as good as one of the models from a recent Dolce & Gabbana fashion show

There's one problem with this story...

The guy on the left is homeless!

That's right, this 5'8'' walking contradiction, has been called everything from "the Beggar Prince" to the "Handsome Vagabond" but he is most widely known as "Brother Sharp". You got it, a homeless man, living in the city of Ningbo, is being called the coolest man in China.

Yes brother...I agree....Sharp!

I've Been Working...(with the BKc)

I know it's been a while since I've posted anything. I wanted to let you know that I'm not dead...I'm just working (like CRAZY actually).

Most recently I've been working with a fashion brand called The Brooklyn Circus. I spent last week in NY helping the brand come up with what I call a "Brand Purpose" and a "Brand Equity".

The Brooklyn Circus is an amazing brand with an aesthtic that is equally amazing. Last week we spent a lot of time talking about the history of the brand, the future of the brand and where the founders (and the rest of the team) wanted to take this amazing entity that they have created.

We had a great time. A big thanks to the entire BKc family and everyone in Brooklyn who made me feel like I'd been there since the beginning....more to come so stay tuned.

Pharrell teams up with Moncler

Grammy award winning producer, writer and recording artist Pharrel Williams has teamed up with Moncler to produce a new collection.

The collection of jackets and vests are built with textiles from Bionic Yarn, a Pharrell controlled company that produces fabric from recycled plastic bottles.

Pharrell is wearing the "Pacifist" version of the bulletproof jacket with Velcro side slits, reversible matte/shine fabric and elongated puffers.

The mostly black collection is highlighted by the use of matte and glossy finishes as well as printed fabric with images of lush forests, shot at dusk by Japanese artist Keita Sugiura.

I think it's a very cool look and a smart way for Moncler to tape into an urban market with a boat load of cash to spend.

The 2010 menswear shows were some of the most creative I've seen in a few years.

Unlike the designs of the past two years - heavily influenced by the economic downturn -where we saw everything from padded jackets, from Calvin Klien, that looked like body armour...

...to peasent chic clothing, from brands like Burburry, that seemed to be celebrating the end of opulence...

...the 2010 shows in Paris and New York seemed to be much more inspired. So inspired, in fact, that illustrator Richard Kilroy decided to document some of the more notable pieces in a collection of hand drawings.

Born in Liverpool, Kilroy is an illustrator who focus on new ways to explore the realm of realism. Mentored by acclaimed artist Dave White, Richard Kilroy's unique approach was further influenced by his fixation on the fashion industry. The result of that fixation is the work you see here.

From Raf Simmons, to Jean Paul Gaultier, Kilroy's illustrations give the designer clothing a contrast and texture that could only be achieved by his pencil drawings.

What this guy does with a sharpened #2 pencil is nothing short of stellar...and I can barely write my A-B-C's in a straight line.

A very familiar face is launching his Spring/Summer 2010 collection with little fan fair (surprisingly).

I ran across these photos a few weeks ago and was really impressed by the stance that this designer has taken on a brand that, up to this point, has been rather utilitarian.

Crisp and clean lines are married with a very urban point of view. The result is a complete menswear collection that is as cool as it is unexpected.

Bet you can't guess the brand....

He told you he he wouldn't stop...

The Neapolitan Sleeve

One of the most difficult things to tailer is a mens jacket. Those who do it well stand head and shoulders above other designers in the men's wear space and they can pretty much charge what ever they want for the work. The British (London in particular), the Germens, the French each have a tailoring style that is beautiful in its own way but, in my view, the Italians do mens jackets about as beautifully as anyone on the planet and one of the things that sets the tailoring apart is the way the jacket shoulder is constructed.

In Italy, two shoulder traditions prevail: those who wear and make one of the two types of dropped Neapolitan shoulder construction, and those who favor the more structured and British looking Roman shoulder.

Neapolitan Shoulder by Kiton

At first sight, the Neapolitan shoulder is meant to look natural and has minimal or zero padding (padding is traditionally added to structure British jackets and coats). The Neapolitan shoulder is the signature of Kiton, a very high end Italian ready to wear flagship house

Above are examples of both kinds of Neapolitan shoulder: the spalla camicia (shirt shoulder in Italian) is on the left: it follows the natural shape of the body, just like a shirt normally would. This purist construction can only be created by a very high end ready to wear house - Emperio Armani will sometimes do this (although very view even try because of the difficulty in construction - this is typically a bespoke job) or, of course, by a Neapolitan custom tailor.

Alternatively there is the Neapolitan shoulder con rollino (with roll in Italian): it has a very narrow and slightly puckered sleevehead, and is normally unpadded. You can clearly see in the following image the difference between the two Neapolitan unpadded shoulder constructions: the con rollino is on the left and the spalla camicia is on the right.

The thing to keep in mind with both of these jacket styles is that there is no padding in the shoulder. A roped sleeve jacket may look like the Neapolitan con rollo but it is not, as the Italian version is achieved with the construction vs. the added fabric.

The complexity of the tailoring means that these jackets don't come cheap but they are well worth the investment. The silhouette is beautiful and the jacket travels exceptionally well. Happy hunting.

Good Friday gentlemen!

For this 'Casual Friday' post I wanted to share a post that I wrote with 5 other gentlemen about our favorite trends in female fashion.

The weekly Monday post from Style with Benefits, 'Menday' (get it 'Menday' instead of Monday), decided to focus on what the guys appreciated most about the world of womens style and the way it's worn by the fairer gender.

Here is the panel of guys (and the name of the blogs they write for) along with my response below.

p.s. Please excuse the photo....I do this post for a female focused blog so I try to turn up the "appeal"...haha...like I have ANY.

...and here was my response to the question, "what is your favorite trend in women's fashion right now?"

"The female fashion trend that I’m loving right now is “Androgyny” (i.e. women taking the best of men’s style and making it their own). The boyfriend jean, the over sized blazer and women dressed like the photo (below) are indicative of the universally known fact that women look better in men’s clothes than we do. Could you imagine a guy walking around with nothing on but a dress shirt? Of course not because that would be disgusting".

Oscars Best Dressed Men

The men of the 2010 Oscars had a masterful showing this year. Typically there are one ore two movie starlets who steal the show with some silky-printed-flowing-back out-high slit gown but this year it was those damn XY zygotes who got all the attention. Here are a few of my favorites.

First up, and in my opinion the best dressed man of the night, Colin Firth. This Academy Award nominated actor from the film A Single Man looked absolutely dashing in this Tom Ford peak lapel suit. The guy just looked...perfect. The slim fit, the width of the lapel, the slightly flared sleeve and the "just the right size" bow tie is outstanding. The arm candy doesn't hurt either.

Jake Gyllenhaal looked fantastic as well. But more than that, he looked like a man who completely owned his look. If the Oscars were the Amazon jungle, then Jake was Bear Grylls and this Burberry tuxedo was the giant snake that he wrestled to the ground and made his bitch.

Another gold statue stand out was actor Ryan Raynolds who wore a beautiful Tom Ford tuxedo sporting a deep V lapel stance. I wish I would have seen a 'hint' of white at the cuff but other than that his look, accented with simple black and gold button studs was executed flawlessly. By the way, he's married to Scarlett Johansson so he doesn't care what you think.

Here are a few of my other favorites from the night.

Tom Ford, who presented at the awards and had a hand in dressing many of the men who got any significant camera time on Sunday, is wearing a one button shawl neck tuxedo designed and made by....(do i really have to tell you?)

Peter Sarsgaard swung for the fences with this scoop neck vest....and the ball hasn't landed yet - Outstanding!

Tyler Perry showed up at the awards as a supporter 'in kind' of the movie Precious. True story: The film was actually going straight to DVD until Tyler slipped it in Oprah's purse and she watched it about a week later.

Question: Who the hell gets close enough to Oprah to put something in her purse?

Answer: The tall black guy in the Prada tux worth about $100 million

Gerard Butler, wearing an Oscar appropriate tuxedo by a lesser known Scottish brand called '...say it again and i'll punch you in the fucking face'.

...I'm JOKING (kinda). Seriously though, how can a guy look that good and scary at the same time?

Oscars + Avatar = "FAIL"

Just like most people, I saw Avatar but unlike most people I didn't think the movie was that great.

Sure it was a cinematic adventure unlike anything I had ever seen but the film....the script, the plot and character development, the dialogue...they all left something to be desired.

For this reason, I wasn't necessarily surprised when James Cameron turned up empty handed at the Awards on Sunday.

I'll do a post on the best dressed men from the awards but in the meantime check out this hilarious video of Zoe (from Avatar) catching James stealing his ex-wife's Oscars.

I know this has nothing to do with Fashion but I thought the video was pretty funny.

Last Train to Paris

Last Night I watched "The September Issue" - a documentary about Anna Wintour the making of the September issue of Vogue magazine.

The documentary was amazing and I would suggest you check it out if you haven't (more on that in another post).

The surprise hero of the documentary was the Vogue Creative Director, Grace Coddington (above to the right of Anna Wintour), who as it turns out, is the creative genius behind the stunning visuals that have made American Vogue so distinctive in the crowded magazine space.

This 60+ year old former fashion model is a flat out genius (not to mention the most lovable women you've ever seen in a documentary). Take a look at some of her more recent work for the magazine in the shots she styled for "The Last Train to Paris" photo shoot that Sean Combs did for Vogue.

Photography Annie Leibovitz is behind the camera lens but it is Coddinton's vision for the shots and the cinematic composition that help to deliver such stunning visuals.

Of course model Natalia Vodianova helps make things a little easier on the eye.

Diesel - Be Stupid

The Diesel brand has been a significant player in the global denim market since founders Renzo Rosso and Adriano Goldschmied (of AG Jeans company fame) founded the brand in 1978.

Over the last 31 years Diesel and it's holding company "Only the Brave", now owned outright by Rosso, has become a flourishing global fashion company with close to $2 billion in global sales and ownership of some of the slickest brands in modern fashion. Rosso's holdings include D Squared, Maison Martin Margiela (heard a Jay Z song lately?...) and more recently Victor & Rolf.

Despite the Diesel brand's close to 30 years of success the brand saw a sharp decline in sales in the late 2000's as upstart brands like Rock & Republic and True Religion begin to eat into the brands global market share (and they produced print ads like the one below - WTF?). The brands sales fell from just over $1 Billion to close to $700 Million in only a few years.

With increasing competition and an unstable global economy the brand has gone back to the basics - producing high quality (back pocket advertising free) jeans for the no nonsense hipster. To celebrate a return to what drove the company to success they have launched a new ad campaign called - Be Stupid.

The campaign, essentially, positions Diesel as the denim for the creative class. If the slick rhinestone, patchwork and stitched initial denim is a "PC", then Diesel is a "Mac" -not as flashy but a lot more free wheeling....

I love the fact that the campaign takes a pejorative and turns it into an aspiration.

...Stupid does things that no one has ever done before...

....Stupid tries and fails...because not trying is worse...

...Stupid goes up and talks to the girl (vs. looking at the girl and talking about her)...

After all, smart people don't make history just because they're smart. They make history because they're smart enough to realize that stupid ideas are the ones that make history.

Your Rain Boots are Fake

Since 1954 the Hunter company has been producing boots that look like this

Named after the color known as Hunter green these weather and water proof boots were originally designed to look and feel like a proper walking boot. Before the Hunter brand, most rubber boots had been designed to be roomy, so that could be pulled off easily but those designs where extremely uncomfortable. The 1950's design of the Hunter rubber boot, patterned after a hiking boot, revolutionized the industry.

For the last 25+ years most of the material used to make the Hunter boot has been sourced from the same rubber plantation in Ghana Africa. The raw rubber is shipped in huge batches and then processed at the Hunter plant in Dumfries. Incredibly simple in its design, each Hunter boot has no more than 8 pieces. That is, except for the Sovereign Hunter Wellington Boot - the brands flagship boot.

The Wellington Boot is made by Hunter but it's NOT just a Hunter boot. The Wellington, or 'Welly' as it is affectionately called, named after the famed Duke of Wellington, (who defeated Nepolean at Waterloo) is a 'bench' or hand made Hunter boot that is lined in French leather with a sole that can be completely replaced at the Hunter factory.

Over the last 50+ years the Hunter rubber boot design has been copied by just about every fashion brand that sells tall weatherized shoe. As a result of this and the brands global familiarity the term "Welly" has become ubiquitous and synonomous with rain boots.

Now, if you're like me and you've been calling your rain boots 'Welly's', don't feel bad because for a paltry $400 you can own a pair of these leather lined beauties....or, you can do what I do and take pleasure in calling out all of your friends who don't know what you just learned.

Recently I was at an event showcasing the latest trends in global beauty and fashion and I found my way back stage where I ran into my good friend and celebrity photographer Annette Navarro.

We chatted for a bit and had a few drinks and wha-do-ya-know....she pulled out the camera and a few days later she sent me these...

This was not a planned photo shoot and we are not in a studio. In fact, in the first photo above I'm sitting on a heating vent.

She is so good it's scary.

By the way...they had really good sandwiches back stage.

Perforated Leather Jacket by Armani

This perforated leather jacket from Emporio Armani is one of the most amazing jackets I have ever seen.

Several months ago I did a post on the rising popularity of baseball jackets and I continue to see this trend being played out as we gear up for the Spring 2010 season. This time, of course the jacket is in leather and perforated.

Even so, it's the fit and the detailing of the Armani piece that makes the difference. The zipper detail on this jacket is particularly interesting.

Now all you have to do is come up with the $1,375 to pick one up from the Emporio Armani online shop. Needless to say, I'm saving up.

Black Dynamite.....Rated Rrrrruuurrah

I don't know whether to laugh

....or cry

....or cry because I'm laughing so hard.

A friend of mine is having a get together to watch a new Blaxplotation film.

It's called Black Dynamite and judging by the trailer it will be the funniest (saddest) movie I have ever seen.

That said, we have to admit that there must have been something about the 70's that won't allow it to die. Unlike any other decade in recent American history, the 70's helped to define our current culture. It represents, like it or not, the US version of the Renaissance.

It was a cultural perfect storm that lead to a creative explosion across music, dance, film, fashion and social-political platforms

A large part of what made the 70's such an amazing decade is that it was so...well LARGE. From the hair to the platform heels to the suit lapels. Everything about the 70's was larger than life. This, I believe, is one of the reasons why it is a moment in our nations history that still influences creative circles today.

From the broad suit lapels and loud prints of Tom Ford to the slim cut dark, unwashed denim jeans that we see just about everywhere. The utter dominance of this decade can't be denied.

By the way..."...but Black Dynamite, I sell drugs in the community" might be the best movie line ever!

If they refuse to make an "Old School 2" then this will have to do.

Global Style Watch - Palmer & Sons

In this world of mass produced....everything....it's rare that you find something that is produced by hand - one at a time. Truly bespoke.

Of course you have Saville Row garments and the occasional custom made furniture and, if you can swing the tab, a Rolls Royce, Bentley or Bugatti can be built by hand and to the owners specifications - but who the hell can afford that. The average millionaire is well into his (or her) fifth decade and I don't know about you but I wouldn't mind a little hand made action now, dammit (add expletive for dramatic effect).

Well thank God for Nik and Jack Palmer of Palmer & Sons leather goods. This Vancouver based, father and son team have been making one of a kind leather bags and accessories for just over three years and it is truly beautiful to see.

Starting the brand by making small items for family and friends the brand launched it's first official collection in the Spring of 2009 and haven't looked back since.

From beautifully crafted computer cases, like the one below, to suitcases and travel bags, the Palmer and Sons brand is bringing a sense of old world craftsmanship back to leather goods.

The entire collection is available on line here and I, personally, find the price point to be outstanding for a hand made bag of this quality. In short, the brand makes the kind of leather goods that you buy, keep and pass down to your son. I think Nik and Jack have the right idea.

Ford brings the Sun (Spring/Summer 2010)

I know the US has gotten something close to 8 "bagillion" inches of snow in the last two weeks so I figured you might be a little sick of seeing people bundled up (I know I am).

Well, if we can't see the sun at least we can look at clothing for the Spring/Summer season.

And if we're talking about a quick cure for cabin fever there's no better collection to dig us out of the dumbs than Tom Ford's new Spring/Summer 2010 men's collection.

After seeing last seasons collection, filled with bright (pink and blue) pastels I didn't think he would be able to raise the bar much higher. I was wrong.

The electricity of the color palette is still there but the use of prints is what really takes this collection over the top. To be fair, it's not like Mr. Ford is the first to do this. Designers and houses like Dolce & Gabbana, Etro and even lesser known designers like Matthew Williamson have done this before (in fact, D&G did it last season). The difference for me is the silhouette (which is awe inspiring) and the use of breathable fabrics that look very substantive.

The result is a collection that takes the expansive color palette and prints from women's wear and pairs it with the angular tailoring and exquisite fabric choices that define Tom Ford's menswear.

It's so beautifully opulent that you almost look at it and say..."where in the world would I wear this?"

Well, its' a little to chilly to wear it just yet so, for now...like the Sun, we can admire from a distance.

Greed...is Good

Gorden Gekko is, in my opinion, one of the best film characters that Oliver Stone has ever created. Not only was the 1987 film Wall Street incredibly entertaining, it was also prophetic in its story telling.

The trailer below is a clear indication that this movie did more than a little foreshadowing...

Now it's 2010 and Gekko is finally out of prison and realizing that greed is not just good...now it's legal. This summer Oliver Stone (and Gekko) are back with Wall Street 2, Money Never Sleeps

Tom Ford Eye Wear 2010

I think it's pretty tough to be innovative when it comes to men's eye wear.

Especially sunglasses. About everything you can think of has been done with respect to frames and to think someone is ever going to improve on the classic design of the Ray Ban Aviator or Wayfarer is a tall order, to say the least.

Even so, there are a few designers who give it a go from time to time.

Such is the case with Mr. Tom Ford (are you really surprised). His Spring 2010 collection is an evolution from last years incredibly successful collection of aviator style frames with precious metals and ebony wood frames.

The 2010 collection includes continues the trend of unique evolutions to traditional styles, like the criss cross nose bridge on the frames below.

My favorite part of the collection?...The print campaign of course.

The Super Bowl is this weekend and I'm looking forward to seeing the New Orleans Saints go "toe to toe" with Mr. Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.

That said, like most of people (52% if you believe the recent poll from MSN) I fully expect to enjoy the commercials just as much or more than the game.

E-Trade is one of the reasons why. Here are a few that you won't see during the "Big Game"

I have two predictions

1. If Reggie Bush gets over 100 yard and gets in the end zone twice the Saints win the game. If this doesn't happen they've got no chance.

2. People will be talking about this freakin' E-Trade baby on Monday morning.

Kanye West on The Sartorialist

Speaking of blogs....

If you follow fashion blogging at all then you've no doubt heard of the Sartorialist. This blog has a huge following and its owner, photographer Scott Schuman (pictured below) is a world renowned blogger and published photographer for the likes of GQ, Vogue and virtually every fashion house you have ever heard of.

About a week ago he posted this photo........

Typically, posts on this blog get about 150 to 200 comments. To date, Mr. West has well over 500 and most of them are really...really mean spirited.

I don't know how you feel about Kanye West. Personally, I think he's a genius who uses a superstar persona as a kind of defense mechanism. The man (and I've met him) appears cocky because he has loads of self doubt. He's a bit of a prick because....well, honestly you'd probably be a bit of a prick too if you had endless cash and millions of fans who worshiped you and the people who told you "No" 5 years ago are now saying "Please".

More than that, If I had to guess, I would say that Kanye is a guy who, like Andy Warhol, believes that you "don't pay any attention to what they write about you. Just measure it in inches."

Blogs like The Satorialist and Fashion Toast, by Rumi Neely, feature outstanding photos of great looking people wearing great looking clothing.

One of my favorites is a blog called Facehunter by a photographer named Yvan Rodic (photo above)

Described as "a man out and about in London and beyond: eye candy for the style hungry" this blog is pure fashion inspiration and after 4 years of successful blogging Yvan has released a book of his best images.

A friend of mine sent me this clip from the Wall Street Journal Online.

Bugatti, the ultra luxury automobile manufacturer has teamed up with the French design house Hermes to create the Bugatti Veyron Hermes Edition.

My favorite quote of the clip comes at around 1:23 in...

"in any recession there are always people that benefit from the recession. People involved in oil...etc"

...yeah...I wanted to punch him in the face too (not for the comment....for the car)

Hermes has long been known as the worlds best saddlery. Clearly, they know a thing or two about horsepower.

I was looking for a way to breath some life into a great pair of Levi's black denim that I've owned for some time and ran across these while web surfing.

The Whitman, by shoe company Clae (shown here in black patten leather) is a fantastic alternative to the black boot or dress shoe when the occasion calls for bit of casual flair. I love a shoe with personality and the Whitman has loads of it.

The low profile of the show gives you the ability to wear it with just about anything and the wingtip accents add a novelty and formality to this trainer that allows it to adapt nicely to nights on the town.

Clae has a collection of about 19 different styles of shoe and the Whitman comes in 11 different colors. The silhouettes are wildly original yet the design aesthetic is simple and relatively easy on the eye. The company does a great job of fusing the comfort of athletic footwear with design cues of traditional dress-inspired styling.

Take good care of your Cash

I have to be honest. It's been a while since I've worn a wallet. I don't have anything against them (necessarily), but in what is becoming a cashless society I have found it more practical to use slim card holders to avoid the bulkiness of traditionally super thick wallets.

Even so, I've been seeing a lot of great wallets lately and am starting to reconsider my decision. Here are a few great single fold wallets by designer that I'm sure you recognize.

The adidas SLVR collection is one of simple sophistication. It is, in my humble opinion, some of the most beautifully designed athletic apparel I have ever seen. Check out the Fall/Winter collection below...

Next to Y-3 (also made by Adidas) the SLVR collection has an aesthetic feel that is without comparison - especially when you consider how affordable the collection is.

Men's and Women's apparel and accessories consist of a reduced color palette with varying color accents each season.

The Style of a King

Today marks the 27th anniversary of the Martin Luther King national holiday. As we celebrate the man who spearheaded the civil rights movement and the dream that has, in so many ways, come to fruition, I wanted to spend a few minutes showcasing photos that disply the personality, style and charm of Dr. King

This shot at the Washington monument, from the foot of the Lincoln memorial, is one that you have likely seen but it's a great shot non the less. The fit of the suit is not too shabby either...it's perfect actually...

There are quite a few shots of Dr. King in this brown mole hair suit. You don't see the brown suit much anymore but I've always been a big fan of this color, particularly in the fall.

This photo of Neil Patrick Harris is a great example of the modern brown suit. I know, he's not a real Dr. but he played one on TV. This color looks just as fantastic when paired with pale pink as it does with a white shirt and thin black tie.

Speaking of thin black ties, this shot of Dr. King in thin black tie and understated tie bar is a testate to his minimalist style. The focus is, as it should be, on substance.

That said, style points don't hurt...

This shot, below, of Dr. King dressed to the nines in light tan poplin with two of his children is a

outstanding shot. I love the combination of imagery - the pristine suit, the father with his children on the swing, the worn soles of his shoes - it is a photo that, at the same time, says this is a person who is about the business of his business as well as his family.

The photos above seem to suggest that Dr. King was a man who understood that fashion should be bought with intelligence, put on with care and then promptly forgotten about so one can go on living his life, or in this instance his dream.

One Pair...Off Suit

I was looking through an old Esquire magazine and happened upon Style feature that I remember liking a lot.

It was of a Tommy Hilfiger Wool Houndstooth Jacket that is actually part of a suit. I looked up a few photos of the suit and was.....well.....unimpressed...

The suit is not terrible but the pattern is so prominent that when you pair the jacket with the pant the overall look is a bit overbearing. There just seems to be way too much going on.

Here's the thing, take the pant away and you're left with this...a thing of beauty.

This jacket with a pair of dark denim or khakis is going to look amazing. Similarly you could pair the pant with a chocolate brown velvet blazer and you create a look that balances out the very vocal charisma of the houndstooth.

There's a lesson here gentlemen - Don't toss the baby out with the bath water. If you have a suit that you feel isn't working anymore you should ask yourself - is it the pieces that aren't working or the combination of the pieces that causes you to cringe?

If one of the pieces can be salvaged or retooled by a different pairing why not give it a try. You might be able to breath a little life into a suit that no longer suits you.

Style With Benefits - Thoughts on Female Fashion

One of my favorite female bloggers, Rebecca, has decided to start a feature on here site, Style with Benefits, that allows male fashion bloggers to provide commentary on women's fashion trends.

She's "injecting some testosterone" into her blog (as she so eloquently puts it). From women’s fashion trends to street style photos, she asked several of her favorite men’s style bloggers to sound off on a weekly ‘panel’ to see if they're on board with what the ladies find popular, attractive or just plain outstanding!

My first assignment was to provide my honest and up front opinion on the trend below...Faux Fur...

In the aftermath of quite possibly the worst natural disaster in Haitian history I have been thinking about how I might be able to do my small part to increase awareness of this tragedy and enable the readers of Tweed & Velvet to help in any way possible.

For those who might not know, Haiti (officially the Republic of Haiti) is a Creole and French speaking Caribbean country that occupies the island of Hispaniola along with the Dominican Republic.

On Tuesday, January 12th, the region was hit with a 7.0 scale earthquake that left much of the country devastated. Since then the earthquake has been the most noteworthy news story across the globe, with most of the developed world rushing to help the people of Haiti.

Fortunately there is no shortage of organizations looking to aid the nation but I wanted to shine the light on one in particular.

Founded in 2005 by Grammy-Award winning music producer Wyclef Jean, Yéle Haiti is a grassroots movement that builds global awareness for Haiti while helping to transform the country through programs in education, sports, the arts and environment. Yéle’s community service programs include food distribution and mobilizing emergency relief.

The mission of the organization is to create small-scale, manageable and replicable projects to contribute to Haiti’s long-term progress. Check out this recent interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper.

The Blazer Alternative

Who would have known that a Bavarian immigrant would be credited with the creation of the fabric that has defined casual wear for the better part of 150 years.

That said, when Levi Strauss begin creating denim jeans, the second best thing ever done with the fabric was the creation of the denim jacket.

Over the last 10 years if a man wanted to bridge the gap between business formal and casual wear, the first thing he reached for was a cotton or wool blazer to pair with a denim or khaki pant.

Well thank God for Mr. Strauss and some Italian Sailors from Genoa Italy (see a short history lesson at the end of this post) because I would submit that you can look just as dapper when you take the denim from the bottom to the top....A denim jacket that is.

Jackets like the one from "The Brooklyn Circus" (above) show great examples of how you can dress up this casual wear staple.

The great thing about the denim jacket is that it is ubiquitous. If a brand makes clothing for men you can pretty much bet that they make a denim jacket. Rag and Bone (above), Ralph Lauren, Topman, ASOS.com, Diesel, G-Star etc...etc...etc... Each of these brands, and countless others, make great denim jackets.

Find one in either a light or dark wash (or both) with a slim profile and high arm holes and wear it with chinos and a plaid button up and you'll look smart without looking pretentious.

Or you could do it like Mr. West and pair the jacket with you favorite color khaki pant and a t-shirt.

Either way, give the blazer a break and top yourself off with a denim jacket.

**Note: The term "denim jeans" is not redundant. Denim is the name of the fabric. Here's a quick history lesson...

The word "jeans" comes from the French phrase bleu de Gênes, literally the blue of Genoa (in reference to the clothing worn by sailors from the Genoa region of Italy). Jeans fabric, or denim, originated independently in two places: the French town of Nîmes, to which 'denim' owes its name; and in India, where trousers made of denim material were worn by the sailors of Dhunga, which came to be known as dungarees.[2]
At the same time, denim trousers were made in Chieri, a town near Turin (Italy), during the Renaissance, and were popularised in the 19th century. These trousers were sold through the harbour of Genoa, which was the capital of the independent Republic of Genoa which was a naval power.

What does this mean??? It means the Italians started the jeans trend about 300 years before anybody in San Francisco (are you surprised?)

Before 2009 Zoe Saldana, born Zoe Yadira Zaldana Nazario, was probably best known for her role as Theresa Jones (fiance of Aston Kutcher) in Guess Who - the reprise of the Sidney Poitier flick "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"...

That, gentlemen, was before 2009. From January to December 2009 this stunningly beautiful women has been in movies that have grossed close to 1.5 Billion dollars in global ticket sales.

Yeah....billion....with a "B". Take THAT Halle Berry

Whether she's playing Lt. Uhura in the J.J. Abrams film Star Trek....

...or, more recently, channeling the 10 foot tall uber-sexy humanoid Neytiri in the James Cameron film Avatar, Zoe has been heating up the screen in every way imaginable.

She has also made blue my new favorite color...

With the ink dry on her contracts for the Star Trek and Avatar sequels, this New Jersey native (by way of the Dominican Republic...cause face it...nothing this good looking ever came out of Jersey) is set to have a career just as beautiful as the women herself.

No Small "Frye"

Since I did the post a few months ago about the Timberland Boot Company I've been mildly obsessed with finding outstanding pairs of brown leather lace up boots.

The good news is that I didn't have to search very far. Truth is that the tall lace up boot is a very popular piece this winter. Every one from classic shoe makers like Red Wing to contemporary collections like those from John Varvatos and Zara have introduced this boot in 09/10.

Tie One On

It’s a new year gentlemen and after taking some time to spend with family and friends over the holiday it’s back to work.

Let me first take this time to thank all of you who have been on this amazing journey with me over the past year. I hope your 2009 was filled with as many blessings as mine. I appreciate your continued support of Tweed & Velvet and hope that you continue to find value in my words during this year. My readers are my inspiration

In 2010 my wish for you is simply this…

May bad fortune follow you around all year long…and never catch up!

I didn’t go to some fancy-schmancy formal affair for New Year’s Eve but I did wear a bow tie - with gray denim a gray cardigan and a blue patterned button up. It was casual enough for an evening with friends, but dressed up enough to demonstrate that I have a certain amount of respect for the holiday that brings in the New Year.

Although I have quite a few, I don’t get to wear bow ties very often. I think that’s going to change this year. I have a sneaking suspicion that 2010 will be the year that this oddly shaped accessory makes its triumphant return to the forefront of men’s fashion.

With the bow tie showing up on the print ads and runways of fashion heavy weights like Tom Ford and Dolce & Gabbana it’s no wonder that fashion from hipster to haute couture has found a way to work it into the look for this year.

Black and Blue? (No)

I'm heading to a wedding this Friday and planning on wearing a navy suit with a thin white pinstripe. The shirt is white and the tie I would like to wear has horizontal stripes of chocolate brown, pink, maize yellow, navy blue and turquoise blue...I know, but trust me I got it from Barneys and it's fantastic. My dilemma is brown or black shoes? Night wedding/reception in Soho. My wife says blacks ok. I say brown. Help?

I had a guy in Europe say to me once "the problem with Americans is they wear black dress shoes with EVERYTHING...I find it very puzzling". Now, I know it doesn't sound like it but this guy was trying to make a heartfelt statement. I believe he was genuinely concerned - and why wouldn't he be.....He's absolutely right!

To answer your question Kenneth, in a word...BROWN! BROWN! BROWN! Yes, I know that was three words but it was the same word said three times for emphasis, which was needed in this case.

Like the other Black & Blue (i.e. the way one looks after taking a beating) this is just not a good look. In fact, a dark brown brogue or wingtip with a rounded toe is the best and most versatile shoe you will ever own.....

...Except for maybe a Carmel colored shoe of the same variety (see above). If the photos above aren't enough you could always go to Google images and type in "blue suit brown shoes", pull up this image from Scott Schuman's The Sartorialist.

Then you can dance around your wife and say "I told you so...I told you I was right...and the best dressed man in America agrees with me" Enjoy the wedding my man!

Dear Tweed & Velvet

Enjoyed your blog and wanted to pose a question to you. I have been unable to really get a solid opinion what what kind of blazer would go with with plaid shirts. I typically wear predominantly red as well blue/green/white plaid patterned shirts. I own a gray herringbone blazer but have had several people insist it's too many patterns together. Would you recommend a navy or charcoal blazer instead?

Well Matt... it sounds like you might need better friends...my friend.

A grey wool blazer (preferable a tweed like the one shown below) is, in my humble opinion, the best option here. I own this jacket and wear it with plaid shirts often.

Now your herringbone blazer can be a great look as well but if the jacket has a herringbone pattern that is very pronounced and thus visible from a few feet a way, you might start looking like an M.C. Escher painting (not a good look at all).

If your jacket looks like the one below then plaid shirts should be approached with caution. If this is the case then you can have your friends back.

The truth is you have a number of options that can look fantastic. If the shirts are mostly of the red, blue or green variety then why not try a well fitted tan or navy corduroy blazer (one with the brown elbow patches will look especially dandy). Pair it with a deep v-neck sweater to bring out the minor/accent color in the shirt.

I don't know about you but I, for one, can't believe that it's already December. I took a little time off from writing to recover from the Thanksgiving holiday and I feel like Christmas is right around the corner (mostly because it is).

The holiday's are here and that means many fashion houses are gearing up for special editions - designed especially to get you to pull out that holiday bonus heavy wallet of yours.

Lacoste is no exception, in fact they have enlisted the help of Brazilian industrial designers Fernando and Humberto Campana to completely re-imagine the iconic polo shirt for the fashion house.

Taking a "more is more" approach, and drawing inspiration from the natural habitat of their native Brazil, the designers took note in this interesting occurrence....

A Thanksgiving Treat

Since it's Thanksgiving I thought I would share one of my favorite recipes with my readers.

Several years ago a crazy ex-girlfriend of mine gave me a Williams - Sonoma "Savoring Italy" cookbook (available at Amazon.com here)

(what?...of course she was crazy!..and my behavior had absolutely nothing to do with it...true story)

I digress...

Like most things from Williams - Sonoma this coffee table size cook book is absolutely amazing and totally handy when you need to whip up something for the n(ex)t girlfriend.

My favorite from the book is the Risotto al Granchio e Gamberi (or, Risotto with Crab Meat and Shrimp).

It's an outstanding dish and is sure to please anyone who is lucky enough to have it prepared for them. Give yourself some time though because, with prep, it takes about an hour and a half from start to finish.

Don't let the cooking time deter you however...an hour and a half spent in the heat of the kitchen could lead to several hours doing something just just as hot and a LOT more fulfilling...

Barker Black on Gilt

Yesterday, the Gilt Group started its annual pre-Thanksgiving Day "Men's Final Sale". Over 50 brands are featured at up to 90% off.

I was lucky enough to pick up 2 pair of shoes from Barker Black. I spotted the Wallace X Lace Up during a recent trip to the Barker Black store in New York city but I couldn't bring myself to drop the $800 required to leave the store with them (legally).

Designer Derrick Miller used to work as a tie designer at Ralph Lauren, but he turned his attention to dress shoes a few years ago when he resurrected the English-bred footwear label Barker Black. His smart shop houses these English bench-made shoes, all of which bear the label’s skull-and-crossbones logo on every sole—providing what Miller calls a “fuck you” quality.

I'm not sure that's a good quality to have but I guess when you look that good you can be a bit of an ass.

Ra-Re (or "Rare" if you're not Italian...)

There are a ton of what most would call "denim" brands out there and many of them excel at what they do because of a very clear focus on this utilitarian garment. Brands like, 7 for all Mankind, Joe, Paper Denim, etc. are just a few of the denim brands that continue to innovate in this space.

For me, however, it starts to get interesting when, what we would call, a "denim brand" starts to branch out from bottoms to have a much broader point of view. Brand like G-Star, Diesel and more recently Rock & Republic have done this very well.

Another brand who has taken a more complete look at high fashion casual wear for men (and women), is Ra-Re (Rare)

The Italian men's and women's wear brand looks to take advantage of the clear connection between the way we are and the way we dress.

Recognizing the duality that exists in all men, Ra-Re designs clothing that is dynamic, fresh, captivating and unconventional but at the same time chic, linear and sophisticated.

The brand describes its sensibility as provocative rebel style with a touch of virtuosity and I would agree. There is a rock and roll aesthetic for sure but it is tempered with a type of transitional coolness...

...it's not what you would call "classic" but it's not so contemporary that its relevance has a shelf life. Ra-Re allows men to create looks that are just that....rare.

Velvet Footprints

Originally made popular with English aristocracy (and made timeless by Hugh Hefner....I'll let you decide who you'd like to emulate) the Velvet Slipper has never really caught on in the US. Outside of the occasional tuxedo pairing by the most confidently stylish gentlemen, this is a shoe that most men admire from afar simple because they don't know what to do with it.

Although it is, technically, a formal shoe it can be fairly versatile when the balance of the outfit is kept simple and worn with exceeding levels of confidence.

This photo (below), from the Sartorialist outside of a recent Ralph Lauren show, is a great example of how this shoe can be worn in creatively casual ways.

Well known brands like Ralph Lauren and Barker Black have continued to keep the Velvet Slipper in their footwear collections for quite some time but grabbing the shoe from one of these brands could cost you anywhere from $300 (if you're lucky) to $900 or more.

That said, you can grab a great pair of bench made velvet slippers, like the one pictured below, from a brand like Shipton & Heneage for about $200 to $250.

These are incredibly well made and I love the fact that Shipton & Heneage allows you to choose from about 60 different motifs - from crossing guns to north stars and even fleur de lis you can prance around in any color and embroidery your heart desires.

Trussardi in Red

Since 1911, when Dante Trussardi began designing leather gloves for this storied brand, the house that is Trussardi has been known the world over for creating some of the most beautiful clothing and accessories that anyone has ever seen.

Initially, Trussardi was known best for leather goods but in the early 80's the house launched it's first collections for men and women. Since then, Beatrice Trussardi, who leads the house with creative director Milan Vukmirovic, has launched the successful Trussardi 1911 line.

A Very Smart Timepiece

Don't get me wrong I love an IWC, Tag Heuer and Omega as much as the next guy. After all, I'm a bit of a traditionalist and believe everyman should own a classic time piece. I'm also a realist and believe no man should ever take himself too seriously.

For those times when 3 piece suits, robot speak and slim round face watches should be left at the office I say go grab a Nooka.

The Fashioning of a Film

Fashion designer Tom Ford (of Gucci and Tom Ford fame) is creating a great deal of buzz with his directorial debut.

The film adaptation of "A Single Man", the 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood, is a day-in-the-life story about a gay British college professor coping with the death of his partner while living in LA.

Staring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore and Matthew Goode the film has been showered with accolades, many saying that it's tough to believe that this is Tom Fords first time (I don't think there are any "firsts" left for Mr. Ford)

Cult of Personality

Over the last several months you've seen me write a lot about what I'll call throwback denim. Denim that is simple and comfortable and comes from a simpler time. A little less "ass-vertising" if you know what I mean...

I love brands like Rock & Republic and True Religion but I hate the fact that other brands think that men don't want other options. Fortunately there are a few denim houses that recognize that the tide is changing and, as a result, are bringing fantastic denim washes and fits without having to scream and shout the brand name.

One of those brands is Cult of Individuality.

The name is a bit of a hint into the brand point of view....

Unlike other denim brands, Cult has made the choice to prioritize feel and fit over other aesthetic attributes. Now don't get me wrong, the denim from this brand looks great but this is a brand that recognizes that the magic of denim occurs when you slide your legs in and pull the waist band over your hips.

If they feel familiar, comfortable and like they've been your favorite pair for a decade then....really...nothing else matters.

Cult of Individuality understands that. It's a "guy's guy" brand of denim – worn-in and rugged, designed to look and feel like the jeans that you’ve had forever that you just live in, but in the most modern of cuts.

Available in Hagen Straight, Rebel Slim, Rocker Skinny & Trysten Boot cut, the line was just picked up by Bloomingdale’s and is also available in specialty stores worldwide – retailing at $185 (a great price-point considering all the hand detail and distressing that goes into these jeans).

Cult of Individuality calls it's denim "the canvas of the owner's life experiences" - what an outstanding way to describe denim....so very true.

Fat Models

If you've followed Tweed & Velvet for a while then you'll remember a post that I did called "Model Homme". It was the first of a group of posts intended to explore the men who model the clothing from the major fashion houses that we all know and love.

I was doing some research for an upcoming Model Homme post and I found a headline that was particularly disturbing.

Size 4 model: I was fired for being too fat

Former Ralph Lauren model Filippa Hamilton, who has worked with the brand for 8 years (since she was 15) was recently released by the brand because, as she states, she was too fat.

The brand informed Filippa of the decision via a letter that Lauren wrote to her agent saying "We're terminating your services because you don't fit into the sample clothes that you need to wear" adding in a response to the media "We regret that our relationship has ended as a result of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract with us..." (read full statement here)

Most easily recognized by RL lovers by the campaign shot above, Filippa is 5'10'', 120 pounds and a size 4....not exactly Tank Johnson. She also says that she has not gained a pound since she entered into her most recent contract.

I could see why she was fired though...

I mean, look at her...she's over-weight and grossly unattractive...

....uhhhhh.....yeah....I'm gonna have to disagree with Ralph on this one.

A New Kind of Timberland

Typically when you think about Timberland boots you think of these.....

And typically when you think about the boots shown above, you think about people wearing them like this...

It's not that I have anything against the standard 6 inch construction Timberland boot - after all I've purchased several pair over the last 15 years and still have a pair now.

Nor do I have an issue with the boot cut jean-draped-over-the-boot look (provided you're not showing the world your underwear).

I do, however, have an issue with the fact that over the last decade and a half the Timberland Boot Company has assumed that re-inventing this beige and brown boot in every color and fabric combination known to man could be considered fashionable or even interesting.

...wait, what kinda boots are these? I can't see the logo....

1. Why muck up construction boot perfection

AND

2. If you're going to innovate....then INNOVATE DAMMIT!!!

Just when I was at my wits end I saw the Fall/Winter collection from the Timberland Boot Company. In a word....OUTSTANDING!!

The Tackhead (above in green canvas with brown leather and black canvas with black leather) and the two vintage boots below (in nubuck and finished leather) come from the new Fall/Winter collection from Timberland Boot Company.

Now, when you think of Timberland boots you can think of theses...

And when you think about the boots shown above, you can think about people wearing them like this...

Now that's Change I can believe in.

Gucci for your iPhone

Okay...I have to admit that, although I felt it was admirable, I wasn't completely sold on the influx of Internet friendly marketing that I've been seeing come from some of the major fashion houses.

Unlike the very intentional work done by brands like Ralph Lauren and Gap as well as e-retailers like UKs Yook.com and the Gilt Groupe, the interactive work lead by some of the premier luxury brands (I won't name names) seemed a little forced and was, as a result, less engaging.

Then my friend Caitlin from Gucci sent me this....

Yep....it's Gucci’s new free App for the iPhone and iTouch...."Child Please!!!" (in my best Chad "Ocho Cinco" Johnson voice). You can check it out starting today on the App Store.

The app features the Gucci Little Black Book city guide, along with images from the latest fashion shows. look books and news from Gucci and creative director Frida Giannini.

On top of that, this free Gucci app comes with a streaming music channel and, incredibly enough, a feature called Gucci Beats.

Created by Frida and Grammy Award winning producer Mark Ronson, Gucci Beats contains personal play lists by Frida and Mark and allows you to mix your own music tracks and share with friends.

I love the fact that as soon as I saw this I thought the same thing, twice...

1. Tom Ford would have NEVER done anything like this (in a bad way)

2. Tom Ford would have never done ANYTHING like this (in a good way)

I'm leaning toward the latter.

I say go to iTunes right now and download this app while it's free before Frida realizes how awesome this is and puts a proper Gucci price tag on it.

Buy This Sock...Period

Did you know that the in some Asian cultures there is a common belief that death begins at your feet. It's one of the reasons why foot massage is so common place in many areas of China. Business men will often leave the office to get a quick foot rub....NICE!!

No wonder lovers of men's hosier (aka socks) will spend a bucket load of cash on great socks. I know it sounds silly...

"C'mon Kenyatte, a sock is a sock is a sock.....right?....."

Wrong!

When walking through the office or running across campus you can put 2 to 4 times your body weight on your feet. With a pair of 100% synthetic socks every step is recoiled and reverberated, magnifying the impact and sending muscles fatiguing shock waves through your ligaments and tendons (is that the scariest thing you've ever read about walking or what??)

Conversely, if you're wearing a great pair of cashmere socks the shock of every step is buffered by cushioning abilities that dramatically outstrip those of other natural and synthetic fibers.

All that said, there two BIG ISSUES with cashmere socks

1. All that cushioning makes for a great winter sock but when it's warm things get...um..."sticky"

2. You can't put them in the washing machine

EUREKA!!! UK fashion house British Apparel Collection Company has introduced Punto - a collection of cashmere socks that are, at once, year round and machine washable.

Gucci goes all 'Social Network'

Gucci is launching a new eye wear line and the fashion house is celebrating with a new photo-inspired social networking micro site....(gonna give you a second to let that sink in)

Gucci Eye Web is a new party photo destination where you can create your own photo art “reflectively” in the lenses of Frida Giannini’s new “eyeweb” sunglasses and can then share the results with friends.

While you upload and share your photos, you change the light, the music and the city you’re playing in. You can also time-stamp your images and keep a party timeline…And, of course, the new eye wear is available for purchase through a link to Gucci.com.

It's no facebook but, as a marketer of beauty brands for the last 10 years, I have to applaud the effort that many of the forward thinking fashion houses have given to finding a way to leverage the online space to create new product awareness.

Now if only there was a way to "poke" a Gucci model....that, my friend, would be a nice widget (sexual innuendo very much intended).

Monday's with Mio Destino

Is there anyone on the planet who actually likes Mondays?

It is, simultaneously, the first day of the work week and the day after the weekend AND I'm pretty sure the relationship between 'Monday' and 'Mundane' is not a coincidence. Unless we're talking about Monday night at 8pm EST between September and January (i.e. Monday Night Football) I think it's safe to say that Monday pretty much sucks.

So here is my attempt to liven things up a little bit.

My gift to you, gentlemen, is the Autumn/Winter '09 Lingerie Trend Report from UK fashion retailer Mio Destino

Mio Destino sells some of the most amazing men's and women's lingerie I have ever seen but the great thing about this trend report is how incredibly interactive this e-book is.

The pages turn, like book pages, on line and almost all of the images are click-able in order to provide better detail and more images of the various pieces. There is even a gift guide (see below) for us "3 legged" schmucks.

In addition to the stunning lingerie from Marlies Dekkers (pause for the cause...)

Nixon Regent

It's no secret that the Nixon brand makes some outstanding watches. The last time I was in San Fran I picked up a 51-30 Tide in Brushed Steel (I saw a few other things while I was there but you can check out my West Coast picks here) . The 51-30 is a beast of a watch. This makes it great for casual wear...not so great for more formal attire.

Well if the 51-30 is "the beast" then the recently released Nixon Regent is "the beauty".

The Regent continues in the stylish yet minimalist tradition that Nixon is known for but that is where the comparison to the typical Nixon stops. The Regent has a 25 jewel Swiss made mechanical, automatic winding movement with a day and date window and a beautiful pale blue sweeping second hand.

At $1,200 the watch is a great deal with a stainless steel case, a scratch resistant sapphire crystal and a genuine Italian Crocodile leather strap with a stainless steel buckle.....Boo-Yah!! (I don't really know why I said "boo-yah" but it just felt right)

So if you're a gentlemen who reads my blog....wait...let me start over...(because ONLY gentlemen read my blog)...

If you're the kind of guy who reads this blog you have undoubtedly given a women flowers and if you've given a women flowers then you have probably given her roses.

I was listening to one of my favorite songs, from an R&B artist named Maxwell, called "Get to Know Ya" and the first couple of lines go like this...

"...they will try to bring you flowers,

but you prefer your roses blue...

...they will try to get in your trousers,

but I was just trying to get into you..."**

Needless to say, I love that line and figured I would try to find out if I could order "blue roses"...

Viola!!!

It took me a while but I finally found a site that would create (the roses need to be dyed) and ship blue colored roses in the states - many sites were Canadian specific, surprisingly.

The site is called Grower Fresh Roses and the novelty roses pictured above are toned from dark blue/purple tips and the color shades into a mauve base.

If you're interested in sending them to your "sweet thang" make sure you call ahead because the bouquet is very popular and it takes about a week to get them - which should be just enough time for you to rest up for the love making marathon you'll be in for when she gets them....enjoy boys!

Jil Sander Online with Yoox

I've been on a pretty big on-line shopping kick lately. A pair of Ted Baker loafers from Gilt Groupe, a cobalt blue double breasted suit from Banana Republic Monogram and more recently a fitted gray denim jacket from an L.A. based brand called Kill City (of course, they don't really advocate the eradicating of entire cities but they do make very cool clothes).

One of my favorite shopping trips is not a trip at all because the shop is online. It's an on line retailer called Yoox. It's a UK based shop that features well and little known luxury brands from around the globe, at discounted prices.

I'm not sure how I missed this but just last month The Jil Sander Group announced the opening of its new online store http://www.jilsander.com/. The shop will be powered by Yoox and offer a full rang of products for passionate web aficionados as well as newly attracted Jil Sander e-shoppers.

Just in time for the Fall/Winter season the ready to wear collections for men and women will be available. Everything from suits, shoes and bags to accessories and eyewear will be a simple mouse click away (which, incidentally, could be very dangerous).

After the success of shops like Polo.com, design houses like Jil Sander and others are taking the step to place more substantive shops on line. I hope this is an indication that there is more to come.

The other day I got an email from my friend Gabby who heads the Public Relations efforts at the Gilt Groupe and she sent me this....

Audrey Kathleen Ruston (better known as Audrey Hepburn) was born in Belgium in 1929 and spent most of her childhood in the Netherlands. She attended boarding school and studied ballet but this is where any comparison to the maturation of a normal women pretty much stops...

By the time she was 22 she was staring on Broadway, at 24 she won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for her performance as the lead in the film Roman Holiday and, one year later, at 25 she won a a Tony Award for her performance in Ondine

When she wasn't acting along side some of the most stylish men in Hollywood (i.e. Gregory Peck, Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, Fred Astaire, Peter O'Toole etc.) she was an artist and a poet and her quotes and playful dialogues can be found all over the Internet.

The below is my favorite and it's how I'm feeling today.

I read an article recently that talked about why men are no longer using condoms. The reasons were not all that surprising...

"I'm only sleeping with one partner"....

..."she said she was safe"...

..."I hate these f'ing things"...

..."I can't feel anything when I wear a condom"

...or my personal favorite

"I'm too big, condoms don't fit me"

That last one is the one I was using until I saw these print ads...

Now I don't feel very "big" anymore.

Real - Plain - Jeans

Even though the US denim market seems to be stabilizing, after over a decade of double digit growth, our beloved blue jean still accounts for over $5 billion of the over $15 billion bottoms market.

On another note...is it just me or does the phrase "bottoms market" sound like a place where a "Real Housewife of (insert city) would go to pick up ass implants??

I digress. The fact is, despite the fact that the US denim market is still huge there has been a gradual slow down as the premium denim market (driven by brands like Rock & Republic, True Religion and 7 for all Mankind) has become saturated.

A while back I did a post called Adore the Unadorned where I talked about my new found love for denim that DIDN'T have the brand name plastered all over the hip pockets. About a year later we are finally seeing a return to common sense jean wearing.

The days of giant "R's" and crochet horse shoes are fading fast. Men's fashion is turning the corner and the every man jean is around the bend. It's the jean made of 100% cotton, not 98% cotton and 2% spandex. It's the jean held together with cooper colored stitching and rivets that you can't see from 20 feet away (sorry...but something had to be said for those quarter size rivets on True Religion denim).

What has me most excited is the fact that leading this charge is the brand that no one expected. GAP...or "the GAP" as most people (including me) call it, has a fantastic range of denim that has just been introduced as part of the Born to Fit collection.

The collection comes in 7 different styles - from skinny to athletic, boot cut to straight leg the entire collection is just-PLAIN-outstanding (pun intended) and with prices from $59 to $89 the only holes in your pockets will be the ones that were there when you bought the jeans.

A blog about Underwear...

If I say to you "name a brand that makes great underwear for women", you would likely say something like "Victoria's Secret" or you might even say "La Perla" or any of the other dozen brands or women's lingerie brands. Fact is, women have tons of options when it comes to brands that specialize in creating great "skivvies"

...uhh...YES...I know the Victoria's Secret girls above don't actually have any lingerie on...and I'm okay with that. You should be too.

Now if I were to say "name a brand that makes great underwear for MEN" the field slims down considerably. You've got 2(x)ist and the omnipresent Hanes brand but the fact is us guys don't really have many options for really great underwear.

Enter Calvin Klein...For almost 20 years the house that Calvin Klein built has rested on a foundation of high grade cotton and elastic waist bands.

As a designer, Calvin Klein is best known for being the "master of minimalism". Creating tailored and casual clothing, for both men and women, that consistently transcended the confines of the trend de joir.

This focus on simplicity is, I believe, the reason why Calvin Klein underwear has continued to be so popular. It is, like the balance of the collections that come out of this design house, incredibly well made and unpretentious. Oh yeah....the new ads with Eva Mendes are easy on the eyes as well.

It reminds me of a quote from designer Tom Ford - "You will never look better than the way we look when we are nude. There are many ways to get dressed badly...there is only one way to be naked"....or in this case only one way to wear your "tighty whities"

Tod's Fall 09/10 Collection

Wow...has it really been that long. I haven't written an entry in almost a week and in the blog world that might as well be about a year.

Truth be told, like most of you, I've been incredibly busy but I'll share that story a different day....for now it's back to work.

First up, one of my favorite footwear and accessory brands has introduce an Outstanding Fall 09/10 collection.

Tod's has introduced an expanded collection of footwear for men and at first glace it looks like something that would come from a different house - the designs are very different vs. the suede, pebble bottomed loafers the brand is typically known.

But if you take a closer look I think you'll discover that each of these looks are very much in keeping with the tradition that is Tod's.

From the ultra utilitarian lace up ankle boot (above), to the incredibly sleek and beautifully scaled desert boot (below). Each of the items in the Winter 09/10 collection is rooted in classic design with details that give it a very timely aesthetic.

I especially like the desert boot and the Pierre Hardy-like trainers below. They even look great with the suit that that bloke is wearing

Of course, it goes without saying that each shoe in the collection is unquestionably Italian. The unapologetic substance of the penny loafer, the midnight blue canvas on the Tod's trainer...all accents that draw the eye toward the floor...toward the shoe.

You know what they say...The first thing a women looks at when she meets a man is his feet. I guess it makes sense that Italian men have so much luck with women...."must be the shoes"**.

The Style & Design of TIME Magazine

I'm a huge fan of the seasonal supplement to TIME magazine called TIME Style & Design - essentially a global look at what is driving the world of fashion, travel, design and all things luxurious.

Every issue has a list of quotes from fashion and design luminaries, on various "popular" topics of discussion.

The Fall '09 supplement was interesting as it showcased quotations, from many popular designers, on the current economic crisis.

...."Yes" it is ironic that people who sell luxury goods are talking about the loss of trillions of dollars of market value and..."Yes" they had some interesting things to say...

"The crisis is the time when one should create new ways of doing things...find solutions...and put even the most basic things into question."

Best Dressed Real Man 2009

Yesterday (sadly), I had to relinquish my crown as Esquire's best dressed real man in America. The new title holder was named on the Today show. I actually talked to Dan (the winner) about a month ago and told him I thought he would win.....score one for Tweed & Velvet!..awww yeah!

Okay so I just finished a blog about the Barneys premium denim catalogue and I started doing some blog surfing.

I was going from link to link when I came across this little gem on the blog of a Singer/Songwriter named Esthero (best known for co-penning three songs on Kanye West's 808's and Heartbreaks release).
